The Board of Trustees of the Toledo Community Foundation, Inc. is pleased to announce the first recipients of the Mr. and Mrs. William Block, Jr. Scholarship. This scholarship will provide ten $5,000 scholarship awards annually to individuals who graduate from a high school located in Wood or Lucas County, OH, who are pursuing a two or four-year undergraduate degree at Bowling Green State University, Lourdes University, Owens Community College or The University of Toledo. The scholarship is renewable for one additional year.

The 2017 recipients are:
• Tawfiq Abou-Dahech, Toledo Early College
• Alexia Aranda, Toledo Early College
• Adam Gaskins, Clay High School
• Tessa Gawrych, Emmanuel Christian School
• Shantel Gray, Central Catholic High School
• Jenna Horvath, Clay High School
• John Jardine, Cardinal Stritch High School
• Hannah Kolinski, Clay High School
• Jacob Lammers, Clay High School
• Trevor Parkes, Bowsher High School

This $1 million scholarship fund, to be managed by Toledo Community Foundation, was established in 2016 by William and Carol Block to support students from Lucas and Wood counties who attend area universities. It will distribute ten scholarships of $5,000 each year for 20 years to students pursuing an undergraduate degree at Bowling Green State University, Lourdes University, Owens Community College or The University of Toledo.

“I can’t think of a better way to give back to the Toledo community than to help these deserving students afford college,” said Bill Block, Jr.

Application for the Mr. and Mrs. William Block, Jr. Scholarship of the Toledo Community Foundation can be made online via the Foundation’s website between November 1 and February 1. Eligible applicants must plan to be full-time college students at one of the four qualifying colleges. The Scholarship Advisory Committee that reviews applications will consider grade point average as well as community involvement, such as volunteer experiences and/or paid employment, and need for financial assistance in order to continue education.

Mr. Block is a board member of Block Communications, Inc. (BCI) and its executive committee. BCI is the parent company of The Blade. He previously served as chairman of BCI, and before that as its president. He was co-publisher of The Blade and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette from 1990-2001.
